AI for New Team Leads
Nine short lessons on the paperwork around leading a small team: a one-to-one prepared from what you owe them, feedback with a moment in it, a handover brief that says which calls are theirs, the team's week with what drops written down, a reply to your manager with the trade-off instead of a yes, dated notes on a clash and the things that are a report rather than a conflict, review drafts checked for gaps the tool cannot fill, a scorecard agreed with HR before the first CV, and the lead's week on one page.
People recently promoted to lead a small team, often the one they used to sit in, who still carry some of their own work, report to a manager of their own and are only starting to know their HR contact. Nothing here needs code; work goes only into the tool your employer approved, described in general terms, and nothing personal about your team or from a customer's file goes in at all.
What you will practise
- A one-to-one with someone who was your peer last month
what you owe them, not what you think of them
- "Great job" and "be more proactive"
the moment you saw, what happened next, and what you would like next time
- A new request from your manager on Wednesday afternoon
a reply with "instead" in it, and the choice left to them
